Special Education Needs (SEN)
Indus International School prides itself on being an inclusive school. The school strives to cater to the diverse needs of students by ensuring that each student gets equitable access to the learning curriculum. We have a resource room where the child with special educational needs (enrolled in the regular mainstream class) goes for special instruction. Trained educators are available there to help the child during the short period away from his regular class. The sole need of having a resource room is to cater to the multiple intelligence of the students. This is done by ascertaining their learning styles, restoring and building on their self-esteem, working on their various strengths and potential in order to make them confident and self-reliant. Specially created worksheets, flashcards, educational games, graded readers and teaching aids to suit the needs of each type of learning difficulty are used to promote academic development. Students with special needs are supported primarily through remediation, accommodation and with certain exemptions especially during examinations, depending on the severity of the difficulty. The motto of our SEN team is “All children can learn”.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Our students from many diverse cultures, religions and creeds, live and study together and make long lasting friendships which continue way beyond their life at school.
Our school is a place where we value the importance of effective communication within and beyond the classroom. We value communication as the means through which we think and learn. We value the ability to communicate with others, in order to develop a healthy global and local perspective.
Our ESL teachers are all language teachers. Together, they help our students become confident users of English, which is the common language of our school. They appreciate that students learn in different ways and therefore use a wide range of teaching methods.
Students with limited English language proficiency receive a combination of ‘pull-out’ and ‘push-in’ learning support depending on their level of proficiency. The emphasis of IISH ESL support programme is to promote academic English proficiency that will enable the integration of the ESL students into the mainstream curriculum in no less than two years. ESL teachers work in active collaboration with homeroom and other specialist teachers to support students.
Our courses are designed to build confidence and improve skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to this we support our students to increase their understanding of Science, Math, History and Economics. The courses also provide opportunities to find self-worth through a range of enrichment activities.
